Activities

Fishing

Anglers can find rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout and white fish in the White River below the cabin. Guests enjoy year-round fishing rights one mile up and down the river from the cabin site, but please respect our neighbors’ private property. For lake fishing, a myriad of high country lakes are accessible through day hikes into the Flat Tops Wilderness . Maps of the area are located in the cabin.

Hunting

Elk, deer, bear and other wildlife thrive in the National Forest public lands to the north of the cabin. In season, these hunting grounds may be accessed from the upper parcel of land on the north side of County Road 8.

Shooting

For those who enjoy shooting clay pigeons, a skeet thrower is available on the cabin deck. For handguns and rifles, a metal target is located in the meadow below the cabin. When handling firearms, please observe safe codes of conduct at all times

Hiking

Whether you want a short and easy jaunt or a vigorous trek, there are limitless hiking opportunities just minutes away from the cabin. Big Ridge, Marvine Creek, Long/Lost and other trails are nearby; other trailheads such as South Fork, Trappers Lake, Skinny Fish and others are within a 20 minute drive.

Camping

From RV camping to wilderness backpacking, the White River area offers a variety of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.  North Fork, South Fork, Himes Peak, Trappers Lake and other campgrounds offer RV enthusiasts comfortable accommodations. For hardier souls, the Flat Tops Wilderness provides backpackers with nearly unlimited opportunities for back-country camping. Maps of the White River National Forest and the Flat Tops Wilderness area are available in the cabin.

Winter Sports

Cross country skiing, snowshoeing and winter river fishing are literally right outside your door. Ice fishing on nearby Lake Avery is a short drive away. Snowmobiling  may also be enjoyed in public lands outside the boundaries of the wilderness area.

Wildlife

The area around the cabin teems with a wide variety of wildlife, including elk, deer, moose, bear, fox, mink, eagles, turkeys and more. Enjoy the sites of our furry and feathered friends, but it’s always a bad idea to feed them.

Games

If you want to just stay inside and play, a variety of games are stored in the cabinet next to the bedroom door.
